The decision by the Madrid leader comes after the regional government accused Mexican authorities of attempting to condition the celebration of the Platino Awards on the president's absence. What was planned as a ten-day tour to strengthen economic and cultural ties concluded abruptly this Friday.
According to an official statement issued by the Community of Madrid, the Mexican Executive allegedly pressured the organizers of the Platino Awards, threatening to close the hotel complex if the president attended the event. Faced with this situation, the president held private meetings with the event organizers but chose not to participate in the official gala to avoid potential harm to local businesses.
“"Now it's the fault of the president of Mexico, of course. Because to think that going to a country to insult them and that they would welcome you with a red carpet and honors was a flawless plan."
The increase in institutional tension also led to the suspension of the third part of the trip, which included a visit to Monterrey. The Government of the Community of Madrid described the treatment received as "unusual" and reported that nominal identification was requested for all individuals meeting with the Spanish delegation.
From the regional government's headquarters, the agenda of these days has been defended against criticism from the opposition in Spain, emphasizing that it included strategic meetings with representatives of the film industry and the management of investments exceeding 1,000 million euros. The president is expected to land in Madrid in the coming hours, concluding a trip marked by diplomatic conflict with the Mexican federal government.
“"a vacation that all Madrid residents have paid for out of our own pockets."
