The initiative is part of the 2026-2027 Participatory Budgets of the Madrid City Council and is listed on the Decide Madrid platform under project code 24045. The current open phase is for citizen support, requiring participants to be over 16, registered in Madrid, and verified on the platform.
Ignacio Echeverría was killed in June 2017 during the terrorist attacks in London, after intervening to defend several people from a knife attack. His act of bravery made him an international symbol of civil heroism, saving three lives.
The proposed bronze sculpture on a pedestal aims to permanently honor one of Madrid's most exemplary citizens in an emblematic location. Two representations are considered: one standing, holding the skateboard as a gesture of respect, or running to aid the injured, as he did in London.
The Ignacio Echeverría Association emphasizes the monument's commemorative, educational, and social value, intending to convey values such as bravery, solidarity, and civic commitment to younger generations.
To facilitate participation, the association has published a guide on its website detailing the steps to support the project on Decide Madrid, including registration, account verification, and phone confirmation. Support is only valid for residents registered in Madrid over 16 years old.
