The Madrid Book Fair has begun its literary journey at the Niño Jesús University Children's Hospital, ahead of its official inauguration. Through the initiative named 'Caseta 0', the magic of stories and youth sagas has been brought to the minors who are hospitalized or undergoing outpatient treatment at the Madrid center.
During the event, over 600 books were distributed free of charge, selected to capture the interest of children and young people. The catalog included titles such as 'Lady Pecas', 'The Sailor and the Sea', 'I Spy', 'Emma and Christmas', as well as popular sagas like 'Percy Jackson', 'Harry Potter', and 'The Hunger Games'. Each child could choose their reading material based on the cover, a character, or the promise of a story to accompany them during their stay.
The literary experience was complemented by various activities. Attendees enjoyed workshops, storytelling sessions, and activities with the clowns from Saniclown. Additionally, members of the 501st Legion of Star Wars roamed the garden, becoming a major attraction for the children.
“"Retiro continues to invade Niño Jesús. Literature is a refuge, a distraction, and support in difficult times."
Esther Aleo, the hospital's medical director, thanked the initiative and highlighted the power of books to offer answers, humor, reflection, or escape, allowing minors to temporarily step away from the hospital routine.
“"We come to Niño Jesús Hospital bringing a cake, but the cake is books."
Eva Orúe, director of the Book Fair, emphasized the close relationship between the two institutions and explained that the 'Feria's ebb and flow' program brings reading to various centers throughout the year. Founded in 1933, the fair is a key showcase for the Spanish publishing industry.
Celia García, Director General of Humanization, Patient Care, and Safety for the Community of Madrid, celebrated the 'pre-inauguration' at the hospital and advocated for the annual repetition of the initiative to bring 'a bit of magic' to patients through reading, play, and the discovery of new stories.
