The Community of Madrid will implement an experimental autonomous vehicle program in late 2026, starting in Alcobendas and the city of Madrid. This initiative, set to last two years with an extension option, aims to position the region as a European leader in this technology.
The project will be developed through a public-private collaboration, involving software companies, fleet operators, VTC companies, and the taxi sector. Autonomous vehicles will operate on real roads within the Community of Madrid, authorized for passenger transport, without granting new taxi or VTC licenses.
The primary goal of this initiative is to reduce road accidents by employing autonomous driving technologies. The regional government draws upon previous international experiences, which include over 20 million trips and approximately 322 million kilometers covered in more than 20 cities.
This commitment to autonomous mobility is complemented by other regional actions, such as the upcoming launch of an autonomous bus line in Leganés and the full automation of Metro Line 6, scheduled for 2027.
Additionally, the ‘Madrid Te Mueve’ program, utilizing shared vehicles, will expand to 13 rural municipalities in the southeast of the Community of Madrid. The Ministry of Housing, Transport, and Infrastructure will deploy this service with 17 vehicles (11 cars and 6 vans) to serve over 27,000 residents, requiring advance booking and subsidized by the Community of Madrid with up to 300,000 euros annually.
