Emergency services in Alcalá de Henares have been working for over 20 hours to control a fire at the Layna waste management company, located in the Azque Industrial Park, prioritizing the protection of an adjacent gas station.

The fire, which broke out on Monday, April 13, at 1:30 PM on Perú Street in the Azque Industrial Park, has kept firefighters engaged in a challenging operation. Although under control, the blaze remains active, necessitating the use of heavy machinery to remove combustible materials.

"These are complicated fires, with intense heat loads, arduous and laborious work, which usually requires heavy machinery to remove."

Initially, twelve fire brigades were involved in the firefighting efforts. Currently, four brigades and a Command Unit remain on site. Firefighters from Alcalá de Henares, Coslada, and Tres Cantos have collaborated, with personnel from Alcobendas joining on Tuesday, awaiting relief from Loyozuela.
One of the primary concerns during the emergency was the proximity of a gas station. Fire official Guillermo Gosalbo highlighted the risk of spread due to burning plastics and cardboard. The strategy focused on protecting the gas station and evacuating six nearby warehouses, successfully confining the fire within the company's plot without any reported injuries.

"The exterior of the warehouse was burning, as well as piles of plastics and cardboard, general recycling material. There was a risk of spread to an adjacent gas station."

This incident is not isolated for Grupo Layna. The company has experienced at least four fires at its Azque Industrial Park facilities in recent years. In July 2016, a fire required 20 fire brigades. In September 2019, over 1,000 square meters of recyclable material burned. Finally, in June 2021, 13 fire brigades and forest brigades worked to extinguish another fire involving material stored outdoors.
