The City Council of Alcalá de Henares has launched the campaign ‘Your pet doesn’t understand holidays’ to raise awareness about animal abandonment during the summer and promote responsible ownership.

With the arrival of the holiday season, the municipal government has launched the initiative ‘No to abandonment, family is not left behind’, under the slogan ‘Your pet doesn’t understand holidays, it understands loyalty’. The aim is to educate on responsible pet ownership and offer viable alternatives to prevent them from being abandoned.
Animal abandonment increases drastically during the summer months, overwhelming animal protection centers and putting the lives of dogs and cats left on roadsides, in rural and urban areas, at serious risk.
The campaign includes the distribution of posters and an open day at the Municipal Animal Protection Center, titled ‘The Day After Abandonment’, which will be held on July 12 between 5 PM and 7 PM.
This event seeks to bring to the public the reality that abandoned pets suffer, through the experiences of rescue organizations such as Vydaanimal Alkalaína, Salvando Peludos, APAP, APAMAG, and Con Alma. They will share cases of animals that have arrived at their centers, their initial condition, and their progress.
During the event, information will be provided on the adoption process, responsible ownership, volunteer programs, and animal sponsorship.

"With this campaign, we aim to create social awareness, highlighting the emotional and physical impact that abandoned pets experience, communicating pet-friendly accommodation options, and promoting legal and responsible adoption instead of compulsive animal purchasing."
