Asphalt paving works on Gran Canal street, a main axis of the Venecia neighborhood, are progressing with the aim of improving mobility and accessibility. The intervention, with an investment of over 500,000 euros, is part of the 'Alcalá improves its neighborhoods' plan, within a global urban modernization program mobilizing around 75 million euros in the city.
The Mayor, accompanied by Deputy Mayors Gustavo Severien and Cristina Alcañiz, explained that the action responds to a historical demand from residents and seeks to improve the connection between the Historic Center, Tabla Pintora, Nueva Alcalá, and the banks of the Henares River.
The project includes the comprehensive renovation of sidewalks and roadway, with over 1,300 meters of accessible sidewalk and nearly 7,000 square meters of new asphalt. Architectural barriers are being removed and pedestrian spaces are being expanded without losing parking spots, even incorporating new ones.
The interventions focus on adapting sidewalks to accessibility regulations, which is particularly important in a neighborhood with a high number of elderly residents. Sidewalks have been advanced at pedestrian crossings to improve visibility and reduce the pedestrian's path on the road, with all crossings now lowered or leveled with the asphalt.
Piquet stated that the goal is for residents to enjoy more accessible, safer, and pedestrian-friendly streets, similar to those already completed on other avenues such as Avenida de Guadalajara, Núñez de Guzmán, Paseo del Val, or Teniente Ruiz.
