These three services are situated in the Emergency Department, the Day Hospital, and the stoma therapy consultation area. Having these adapted bathrooms is crucial for ostomy patients to perform necessary hygiene and pouch changes comfortably. They are equipped with a lowered sink, ample counter space, a showerhead for efficient rinsing, a large mirror, soap, and hangers to facilitate stoma care.
These facilities address a significant need, allowing patients to manage their ostomy care in a suitable environment, ensuring greater comfort, privacy, and security. The presence of adapted bathrooms throughout the hospital enhances their healthcare experience and promotes greater peace of mind and autonomy.
Diet is another key factor in the quality of life for ostomy patients, influencing stoma function, stool consistency, gas production, odor, and the risk of dehydration or digestive discomfort. Appropriate food choices and preparation methods, along with nutritional education, can significantly improve their quality of life.
This focus led the Hospital's Ostomy Patient Care Commission to launch the book Cook with Confidence. Adapted Recipes for Ostomy Patients, endorsed by various health organizations. The publication features over one hundred adapted recipes and practical advice.
The book was presented during the 4th Ostomy Patient Conference, which this year focused on the importance of diet and its impact on health and quality of life. The event included healthcare professionals and experts from the Alcalá de Henares School of Hospitality and Tourism. The Gerent of Care for the Madrileño Health Service, Elena Fernández Cano, participated in the inauguration.
Throughout October, the hospital organized activities for the Ostomy Patient Month to raise awareness and highlight the needs of this community. Additionally, the exhibition Invisible was hosted, showcasing photos and testimonials about the daily realities and challenges faced by people with ostomies, provided by FAPOE, SEDE, and Coloplast.
