The Passion of Daganzo de Arriba, one of the oldest representations in the Community of Madrid, commemorates its fortieth anniversary this year. The event was attended by the regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, who highlighted the deep cultural and religious significance of this tradition.
“"It is a matter of faith and culture; this is what we are and where we come from, and it is what has shaped part of our thoughts."
During her speech, Díaz Ayuso emphasized the intergenerational participation in the staging, where residents of all ages are actively involved. The president added that this commitment ensures the continuity of the tradition, stating that "they are here to stay, they are not a fad, they are not the past."
Since its inception in 1986, the representation has been distinguished by its circular format in the Plaza de la Villa, allowing spectators to follow the last three days of Jesus Christ without having to move between scenes. This feature makes it the second oldest Passion play in the region, surpassed only by that of Villarejo de Salvanés.
The residents of Daganzo de Arriba play a crucial role, collaborating in the creation of sets and costumes, and acting in the 16 scenes that recreate evangelical passages, from Jesus' entry into Jerusalem to his Resurrection. The Passion of Daganzo is one of the nine Holy Week celebrations in the Community of Madrid declared of tourist interest, valued for their roots, uniqueness, and appeal.
