The Alcalá de Henares City Council is organizing the first Intergenerational Leisure Festival next Saturday, April 18, in the Plaza de Cervantes, aiming to foster coexistence and the exchange of experiences between young people and seniors.
This festival, scheduled from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, is the result of a joint effort between senior and youth groups, promoted by the departments of Family, Childhood and Youth, Health (through the Otra Forma de Moverte program), and Seniors. The initiative seeks to create a space for mutual learning and fun, where different generations can connect through various activities.
The construction of bonds between people of different ages is becoming increasingly complicated due to the intergenerational gap regarding healthy leisure styles and the productive use of free time.
The Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Health, Isabel Ruiz Maldonado, along with Councilors Pilar Cruz and Esther de Andrés, presented the event on Wednesday, April 8, at the Capuchinos Auditorium. During the presentation, they highlighted the City Council's commitment to initiatives that promote intergenerational coexistence and help prevent unwanted loneliness, building a more humane and participatory city.

"The Festival seeks to establish active links through a participatory and collaborative methodology that generates impact on both generations and simultaneously influences the community."
The festival program includes over thirty activities for leisure and expression, led by both young people and seniors. These include tournaments, board games, sports, video games, card games, traditional games, social media activities, music, and cultural performances. Plaza de Cervantes will be divided into thematic areas such as the Playful Area (chess, mus, football chapa, Smash Bros), the Creative Area (fabric painting, graffiti, hamma beads, wicker art), and a Podcast space for stories and interviews.

"Placing seniors at the center of public policies means generating real opportunities for participation, fostering their emotional well-being, and recognizing the active role they play in the social life of our city."
The Music Kiosk and an adjacent stage will host poetry recitals, Zumba, pasodoble with headphones, urban voice performances, DJ sets, urban dance, sevillanas, staged readings, and a closing concert by the group Unidos por la Música. Participation in the festival does not require prior registration and will be subject to available capacity. This program, Otra Forma de Moverte, is funded by the Government Delegation for the National Plan on Drugs.
