Residents of the Dehesa Vieja neighborhood in San Sebastián de los Reyes had been requesting intervention on the deteriorated Gregorio Marañón promenade for years. Finally, the City Council has announced the completion of the first phase of works on this space, an initiative promoted by the Department of Parks and Gardens, which entailed an expenditure of 200,000 euros.
The renovation has been comprehensive, addressing both the pedestrian area and its surrounding elements. The works have completely transformed its appearance and functionality, restoring to residents a suitable place for leisure and daily enjoyment. Among the most notable improvements is the new paving with permeable cobblestones, replacing the old dirt surface on the main promenade and in the corner area. This material not only enhances aesthetics but also facilitates the natural filtration of rainwater, reducing puddle formation.
Additionally, the existing side planter has been removed, and elevated tree pits have been installed, providing a more efficient solution for tree care. The replacement of dead or unhealthy trees has also been carried out, and new arboreal elements have been incorporated to enrich the promenade's vegetation. Finally, the urban furniture has been renewed, contributing to a better experience for those who use the promenade daily, such as walkers, families, and elderly individuals.
The actions carried out are described as «more than necessary», an expression that reflects the urgency with which the residents themselves experienced the situation.
It is important to note that the completed works correspond only to the first section of the Gregorio Marañón promenade. This suggests that the improvement project could continue in the future, although the City Council has not yet specified concrete plans for intervening in the remaining sections or their timeline. The current investment of 200,000 euros has been entirely allocated to this initial phase, and the results are already visible to residents.
With this intervention, the Dehesa Vieja neighborhood gains a regenerated urban space. The Gregorio Marañón promenade, which until recently presented a neglected image, now regains its function as a meeting point and thoroughfare for local residents.
