The Leganés City Council, in collaboration with Ecovidrio, has launched the "EcoBarrios" campaign in the El Carrascal area with the aim of increasing glass container collection.

The campaign, which was previously carried out successfully in the neighborhoods of Leganés Norte and Zarzaquemada, has so far achieved a 7.8% increase in glass collection six months after its completion. This time, door-to-door visits are being conducted in over 4,100 homes in El Carrascal, after detecting through Artificial Intelligence tools that the area has potential for increased recycling.
The Councilor for the Environment, Violeta Bonet, explained that "thanks to data analysis with the latest technologies, we have identified which neighborhoods could improve more in glass collection, and we are carrying out different campaigns through which we have already reached more than 43,000 residents to mobilize them about the importance of recycling." In total, 32,000 residents were reached in the previous districts, and now over 11,500 in El Carrascal are being contacted.
Residents of El Carrascal are receiving an informative letter and visits from an environmental education team to resolve doubts and raise awareness about the importance of recycling glass containers for the environment and Leganés' sustainable future. Additionally, a new green bin will be installed in the neighborhood to expand the existing infrastructure.
These actions are part of Ecovidrio's Digital Transformation Plan, which analyzes daily collection data and compares it with sociodemographic variables and data from other cities to identify priority areas for action. The glass deposited in the bins is 100% recycled and reused indefinitely.
Ecovidrio, a Collective System of Extended Producer Responsibility (SCRAP), has been managing glass collection and recycling in Spain since 1998, with the commitment of nearly 6,000 packaging companies.
