The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) has warned residents of Alcorcón planning to travel to the Sierra de Madrid for the solar eclipse that access to Navacerrada, Cotos, and Valdesquí may be restricted once parking areas are full, which is expected by early afternoon.
The possibility of temporary closures on the M-601, below the pass, is being considered to prevent area collapse and keep evacuation routes clear. The DGT reminds the public that parking on road shoulders or unauthorized areas is prohibited, meaning arrival in the sierra does not guarantee parking. Avoiding private vehicles is recommended.
In this scenario, public transport emerges as the primary alternative. The Ministry of Transport has confirmed a reinforcement of Cercanías (commuter rail) services in major urban centers to accommodate the anticipated increase in travelers. A strategic reserve train will be available for line C8b heading to the sierra.
Furthermore, the Regional Transport Consortium (CRTM) of the Community of Madrid will strengthen the most used bus lines connecting the capital with areas of high interest for observation.
For those who prefer to avoid travel, the eclipse will also be visible from Alcorcón with an approximate solar disk obscuration of 99.89%. Although not within the path of totality, the phenomenon will offer an extraordinary view. The use of certified solar viewing glasses and adherence to safety recommendations are reminded.
