Preparations for the large-scale events of Pope Leo XIV in Madrid, primarily scheduled for Plaza de Lima and Plaza de Cibeles, have begun and will lead to significant traffic restrictions. These disruptions will occur progressively, peaking between June 3rd and 9th, particularly affecting access to the capital from southern municipalities like Alcorcón.
The Madrid City Council has warned that almost the entire city will be impacted by security and organizational measures. The use of the M-30 as an alternative route is recommended, along with avoiding private vehicles towards the city center during peak attendance days.
For many workers and students from Alcorcón, this will mean longer commutes and increased waiting times. A notable rise in the use of Cercanías (commuter rail), Metro, and interurban buses is expected. Authorities advise planning journeys in advance and prioritizing public transport.
With an estimated attendance of up to two million people, the Madrid City Council will reinforce public transport services, parking facilities, and the taxi fleet to mitigate the impact of restrictions, which will last over twenty days encompassing setup and celebrations.
Furthermore, the City Council has requested the cooperation of companies and institutions to promote remote work and flexible hours, a measure that could benefit Alcorcón residents by reducing daily commutes to Madrid during this challenging period.
