Municipalities in the south and southwest of Madrid have mobilized to host hundreds of residents who had to abandon their homes due to the advancing fires in the Sierra Oeste. Sports halls, municipal centers, and other spaces have been set up as makeshift shelters.
The Community of Madrid, in coordination with local councils, maintains 14 active reception points attending to a total of 2,044 people. These southern and southwestern municipalities have taken on a significant portion of the care for the evacuees.
Specifically, Móstoles is hosting 200 people, Leganés 171, Getafe 150, and Alcorcón 102. These four municipalities collectively house 623 evacuated residents, who are awaiting the evolution of the fires to return to their homes.
These figures are joined by those from other southwestern municipalities such as Villaviciosa de Odón (215 people), Brunete (182), Villamanta (200), Villanueva de la Cañada (72), Villamantilla (60), Navalcarnero (21), and Villanueva de Perales (21).
The complete distribution across the 14 reception points is as follows: Las Rozas (250), Villaviciosa de Odón (215), Móstoles (200), Villamanta (200), Alcalá de Henares (200), Alcobendas (200), Brunete (182), Leganés (171), Getafe (150), Alcorcón (102), Villanueva de la Cañada (72), Villamantilla (60), Navalcarnero (21), and Villanueva de Perales (21).
The regional network is complemented by points set up in Las Rozas, Alcalá de Henares, and Alcobendas, which are accommodating 650 people. While emergency teams continue to work on the ground, the 2,044 housed individuals remain away from their homes, many uncertain about when they can return or the condition of their houses and surroundings.
