For the first time, the Getafe City Council, through its Senior Citizens department, has extended its program throughout the summer months, achieving a successful participation rate with over 450 seniors enjoying spaces outside their homes in a healthy and safe environment.
The Councilor for Senior Citizens, Gema Cáceres, explained that during the summer, spaces such as the Therapy Center on Polvoranca street and the Almendro Day Center were adapted to serve as climate shelters, with activities extended weekly to maintain a municipal connection for these residents.
The program featured meeting spaces organized into groups based on similar profiles, needs, and interests, held at municipal centers close to their homes. The aim was to prevent sedentary lifestyles and promote an active routine, particularly for the most vulnerable seniors during the holiday period when activity offerings typically conclude.
Professionals from the Casa de las Personas Mayores (House of Senior Citizens) facilitated activities including gerontogymnastics, cognitive exercises, and specific therapies (Music Therapy, Biodanza, Daruma), targeting participants from Psychomotor Stimulation programs, Occupational Therapies, and the ‘Contigo’ program against unwanted loneliness.
During June and July, over 40 groups participated in municipal centers across all neighborhoods of Getafe. In August, activities continued at the Almendro center, the Therapy Center on Polvoranca street, and the Civic Centers of Las Margaritas and La Alhóndiga.
