The Madrid City Council has announced that the new Southwest Green Boulevard tunnel, a major project of the current municipal term, will be operational by the end of this year. This initiative, with an investment of 420 million euros, aims to eliminate the urban barrier that has divided several neighborhoods in the Latina district for decades and significantly improve one of the main access routes to the capital.
Although the project is entirely within the municipality of Madrid, its impact is highly significant for residents of nearby towns such as Alcorcón, Móstoles, and Navalcarnero, who use the A-5 daily for their work, education, and personal travel.
According to municipal forecasts, the tunnel will be ready for use by the end of December. Once open, traffic will resume its flow through the new underground route while surface works continue. The project covers the section between Avenida de Portugal and Avenida del Padre Piquer, an area with intense daily traffic.
In recent months, the construction work has led to traffic modifications and frequent congestion. The tunnel's opening is expected to restore a degree of normality to this southwestern corridor, one of the region's busiest.
