The Getafe City Council has enabled the facilities of the Getafe Air Base (ACAR) to host residents evacuated from the forest fires affecting the Community of Madrid, providing accommodation, meals, and care.
The municipality of Getafe has activated an aid operation for residents evacuated due to the severe situation caused by forest fires in the Community of Madrid. Since Friday night, the ACAR has begun receiving individuals who have had to leave their homes, offering them accommodation and meals.
The initiative is being carried out in coordination with the Government Delegation, the Spanish Air and Space Force, and the Community of Madrid. The mayor of Getafe, Sara Hernández, expressed her solidarity and affection for the affected families, and acknowledged the work of firefighters, forest brigades, and emergency services.
The Getafe City Council has taken responsibility for managing and covering the food expenses of the evacuees through emergency contracts processed with local establishments. Companies such as Costco and Mercadona have also contributed with donations of hygiene and personal care products.
Among those being hosted are about twenty families with underage children. The municipal protocol also includes care for the affected residents' companion animals, for which the City Council has guaranteed food supplies from the Animal Protection Center.
The reception, transfer, and accommodation logistics are being coordinated on the ground by officers from the Getafe Local Police and volunteers from Civil Protection. The mayor thanked both bodies for their work, as well as other municipal services such as LYMA and the departments of Sports, Maintenance, Signage, and Internal Affairs.
