The mayor of Fuenlabrada, Javier Ayala, participated in the Forum of Mayors within the World Congress of Friendly Cities and Communities, where he presented the 'Share' project as a «good practice» in housing. This program involves the construction of about twenty apartments for seniors in a former disused school, which will include common areas.
The initiative aims to benefit both seniors, who will cede their old homes to the City Council for affordable rental, and young people, by offering them opportunities for emancipation. The 'Share' project seeks to «find housing solutions for older people with the aim of extending their personal autonomy».
Ayala spoke as a representative of cities that «best implement their policies for seniors». The congress, under the theme ‘Let's Transform Together! A Connected, Equitable, and Sustainable World, Adapted to All Generations’, addresses issues such as social connection, digital inclusion, sustainability, and participation, in a context of increasing longevity.
Fuenlabrada has presented itself to representatives from administration, researchers, social organizations, and experts from over 60 countries as a city committed to building more inclusive and friendly communities. In addition to 'Share', the intergenerational project ‘Seniors Tell Their Stories and the Use of Technology in Care’ were also highlighted as «two good practices» by the City Council.
It is noteworthy that Fuenlabrada has been a member of the World Health Organization's (WHO) Age-Friendly Cities network since 2018.
