The Popular Party of Alcorcón has announced it will present a motion at the upcoming municipal plenary session aimed at improving and expanding the town's network of libraries and study rooms. The initiative arises from the need for adequate spaces for students during key periods such as the PAU (University Entrance Exams) and university exams.
The party members argue that libraries are an essential public service and criticize the current "shortcomings" of the municipal network, including "limited hours, lack of study spaces, improvable facilities, scarcity of technological resources, and inequality between neighborhoods." They particularly highlight the situation in Ensanche Sur, an area with thousands of residents who still lack a municipal library or public spaces designated for studying.
The motion proposes specific measures such as extending opening hours and study rooms, especially during exam periods, promoting the future library in Ensanche Sur, renovating facilities and technological resources, and fostering cultural activities to make these spaces more dynamic and useful.
“"It is incomprehensible that during the PAU and exam season, there are students in Alcorcón who cannot find a place to study, libraries with insufficient hours, or entire neighborhoods that still lack these basic services."
The spokesperson for the Popular Municipal Group, whose identity is not specified in the source, criticized the current situation, emphasizing the importance of libraries as a tool for equal opportunities. "Defending libraries is defending equal opportunities. Not all students have adequate conditions at home to prepare for the PAU or their exams, and the City Council has the obligation to guarantee these spaces," he stated.
