Mobility in Alcorcón has been a recent challenge, particularly with the undergrounding works of the A-5, which have caused constant congestion. This situation has led thousands of residents to opt for public transport, making the C-5 line of Cercanías Madrid a fundamental artery for their daily commutes.
Despite its growing importance, the C-5 has faced criticism due to frequent incidents, including delays, breakdowns, and overcrowded trains, especially at stations like Alcorcón Central and San José de Valderas. These issues have prompted numerous complaints to the Ministry of Transport to improve service quality.
The objective is clear: to modernize the line, increase its capacity by 60%, and improve both signaling and accessibility.
The investment announced by the Ministry of Transport aims for a deep modernization of the line, which will include extending platforms for longer trains and implementing the ERTMS Level 2 system, a European standard that will optimize circulation and reduce waiting times. Station improvements are also planned to facilitate access for people with reduced mobility.
However, these improvements will entail service disruptions. Significant closures are expected, such as the one planned for the summer of 2027 between Atocha and Cuatro Vientos, lasting approximately four months, and other interruptions in 2028. To mitigate the impact, alternative plans with buses and coordinated reinforcements with the Regional Transport Consortium will be implemented.
In addition to current infrastructure upgrades, discussions are resuming regarding the extension of the C-5 southwest, focusing on a connection to Navalcarnero and potential branches to nearby municipalities like Villaviciosa de Odón or Boadilla del Monte. The Ministry of Transport has already initiated a feasibility study for these extensions, which could transform mobility in the south of the Community of Madrid.
The renovation will also extend to the train fleet. By 2031, new trains with greater capacity, full accessibility, spaces for bicycles and strollers, as well as modern services like Wi-Fi and USB sockets, are expected to be introduced. This modernization aims not only to enhance the user experience but also to increase efficiency and reduce technical incidents, thereby restoring the confidence of Alcorcón residents.
