The municipality of Alcorcón has recorded unprecedented growth in organic waste collection during 2025, reaching 1010.1 tons. This figure represents a 121.44% increase compared to the previous year, consolidating the implementation of the brown bin initiated comprehensively by ESMASA in 2023.
The president of ESMASA, Raquel Rodríguez, praised citizen involvement in this achievement, stating that "our residents are highly committed to proper waste management." These figures highlight a greater collective awareness regarding waste separation and a commitment to sustainability.
The brown bin, designated for food scraps and biodegradable materials such as peels, coffee grounds, or vegetable waste, allows for their transformation into compost or biogas. Since its full implementation, collection has shown a steady upward trend: in 2023 it multiplied fivefold compared to the 2022 pilot project, increased by 87% in 2024, and now, in 2025, it has doubled again.
Concurrently, the use of the blue bin for paper and cardboard grew by 3.48%, totaling 5004.4 tons, and the collection of plastic packaging increased by 0.83%, reaching 4107.3 tons. In both categories, Alcorcón surpasses the national average for recycling per inhabitant. Glass recycling reached 2341.1 tons, and bulky waste collection grew by 4.5%.
