The Chapinería City Council has announced a new initiative by the Community of Madrid aimed at individuals over 65 residing in towns with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants. The program encourages them to discover the region's cultural, historical, and landscape treasures.
Jointly promoted by the ministries of Family, Youth and Social Affairs and Culture, Tourism and Sport, in collaboration with the Federation of Municipalities of Madrid, the proposal includes routes through World Heritage Cities, Villas of Madrid, and the Sierra Oeste. Chapinería will play a significant role in the latter.
One of the Sierra Oeste itineraries will connect Chapinería and Cadalso de los Vidrios, showcasing cultural and heritage attractions such as churches, palaces, the El Águila Environmental Education Center, and the La Mezquita archaeological site. The aim is to highlight heritage and foster community.
The program also features itineraries through the three UNESCO World Heritage Cities: Alcalá de Henares, Aranjuez, and San Lorenzo de El Escorial, with visits to emblematic sites like the Birthplace of Cervantes and the Royal Palace of Aranjuez. Additionally, routes have been designed for the Villas of Madrid, including Chinchón, Colmenar de Oreja, Nuevo Baztán, Manzanares el Real, Buitrago del Lozoya, Rascafría, Torrelaguna, and Navalcarnero.
A second itinerary through the Sierra Oeste is planned, covering Fresnedillas de la Oliva and Colmenar del Arroyo, with stops at the Lunar Museum and the Deep Space Communications Complex of Robledo de Chavela.
The routes are scheduled to launch in the first half of 2027, taking place on weekdays and including bus transportation, entry to monuments, an accompanying guide, and universal accessibility.
The initiative aims to promote active aging, social interaction, and combat loneliness, while also boosting domestic tourism and revitalizing municipal activities during weekdays.
Local city councils will be responsible for disseminating program details and facilitating participant registration. The Chapinería City Council will provide information on participation conditions, dates, and enrollment procedures once the program is finalized, encouraging its senior residents to explore the region's heritage.
