The Redueña Town Council, in the Sierra Norte of Madrid, has organized a program of workshops and a technical conference in April and May 2026 to promote reflection on regenerative livestock farming and the conservation of dehesas.
The program, named 'Living Dehesas', aims to open a space for dialogue among the local community, livestock professionals, consumers, technicians, and researchers. Municipal representatives from the Sierra Norte will also participate to address challenges related to improving environmental quality, ecosystems, and silvopastoral products and services.
Activities will begin with two workshops at the Plenary Hall of Redueña Town Council. The first, on April 27, will focus on the dehesa system, its ecosystem, ownership, production, and consumption, with an introduction to silvopastoral systems in the central region. The second workshop, on April 28, will explore the 'agricultural memory' of livestock farmers in Redueña and the Sierra Norte, facilitated by an expert from the Asociación Economías BioRegionales.
The main technical conference, 'Living Dehesas. Regenerative Livestock in Redueña', will take place on May 8. This working session seeks to understand the current situation and usage plan of the local dehesa, and to compare experiences of livestock farms that are contributing to regenerating silvopastoral systems. It will address the risks faced by ecosystems, animal health, and the economy of livestock farmers. It will feature presentations by experts from the Madrid Institute for Rural, Agrarian and Food Research and Development (IMIDRA) and the Regional Service for Agrifood Research and Development of Asturias (SERIDA).
Finally, on May 9, a guided walk through the dehesa of Redueña will be held. This informative and educational activity, open to all ages and families, will provide an opportunity to learn firsthand how to conserve the agricultural and forestry resources of the municipality. The departure point will be the Redueña Town Council.
