The City Council of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, in collaboration with various local entities specializing in environmental education and conservation, has organized the II Environmental Week. This event will take place over eight days, offering residents and visitors the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities designed for all ages.
The program includes interpretive routes, children's and family workshops, conferences, thematic visits, clean-up drives, and film screenings. The main objective is to promote the knowledge, care, and responsible enjoyment of the municipality's rich natural heritage. "San Lorenzo de El Escorial possesses an extraordinary natural heritage, which is an essential part of our identity," stated the mayor, Carlota López Esteban, inviting the public to "look at our surroundings, get to know them better, and get involved in their conservation."
Activities will commence on Saturday, May 30, at the Luis Ceballos Arboretum with a dog-friendly walk through La Herrería, followed on Sunday, May 31, by the thematic visit "The Amphibian Challenge." For both events, information and registration can be obtained by calling 91 898 21 32.
Conferences will play a significant role. On Monday, June 1, Miguel Ángel López Varona (Abantos Activo) will give a talk titled "Lichens and Air Quality in San Lorenzo" at the Casa de Cultura. On Tuesday, June 2, Juan Carlos Álvarez Ruiz (Ateneo Escurialense) will present "Ecology of the Oceans," also at the Casa de Cultura. Both sessions are scheduled for 6:00 PM with free admission until capacity is reached.
On Wednesday, June 3, a clean-up drive will be held in the natural environment, starting from the beginning of the Camino Horizontal. That same afternoon, the Plaza de la Constitución will host the children's workshop "The Water Cycle" (Canal de Isabel II), and the Casa de Cultura will feature the conference "Birds of the Sierra de Guadarrama" by Carlos Sánchez Delicado (SEO Sierra de Guadarrama).
The program for Thursday, June 4, includes a botanical walk at Fuente del Seminario and another clean-up drive. In the afternoon, the Colectivo Rousseau will present the film "Farewell to Matiora" and a subsequent discussion at the Casa de Cultura.
Friday, June 5, will focus on direct contact with nature, with activities such as the "Reconnect Your Health with Nature" scavenger hunt-walk (Hospital El Escorial and Luis Ceballos Arboretum), clean-up drives, and visits to the Social Gardens of La Olmeda and Felipe II's forest.
The Environmental Week will conclude on Saturday, June 6, with a guided excursion on "The Isabella Butterfly in Abantos" (Abantos Activo), a visit to the garden of the La Huerta Esco-lógica Association, and the family workshop "Tracks of Iberian Fauna."
Furthermore, throughout June, the Colectivo Rousseau will continue its environmental film series at the Casa de Cultura, featuring screenings such as "Dersu Uzala" and "The Promised Land."
