During the interruption, the C-5 service was split into two sections: from Humanes or Fuenlabrada to Villaverde Alto, and from Móstoles El Soto to Embajadores, both with a 10-minute frequency. Renfe also operated shuttle trains between Villaverde Alto and Méndez Álvaro every 35 minutes. Travelers with Cercanías passes could use EMT bus services.
This closure is part of Adif's efforts to implement a new track layout at Atocha Cercanías, scheduled during the summer to minimize user inconvenience. The C-5's service resumption coincides with the third and final phase of works at Atocha, which will continue until August 28th and affect lines C-2, C-7, C-8a, C-8b, and C-10.
Lines C-2, C-7, C-8a, C-8b, and C-10 are experiencing modifications in their frequencies and routes. For instance, the C-2 runs on the bypass track between Guadalajara and Atocha with frequencies of 20-30 minutes. The C-7 has services between Alcalá de Henares and Atocha every 12-16 minutes, and between Príncipe Pío and Nuevos Ministerios every 30 minutes.
The C-8a and C-8b operate between El Escorial/Cercedilla and Atocha every 30-60 minutes. The C-10 service is limited to a 30-minute frequency between Villalba and Delicias, with no access at Méndez Álvaro.
Further disruptions are planned for the weekends of August 29-30 and September 5-6 on lines C-3 and C-4, affecting the Sol tunnel between Atocha and Nuevos Ministerios. Atocha and Nuevos Ministerios will serve as provisional termini.
The overall transformation project for Atocha Cercanías, with an investment of nearly 56 million euros, aims to increase the capacity of the Sol tunnel by 33% starting in October. It includes tunnel connections, escape route creation, and track remodeling.
These works, financed by the European Union's NextGenerationEU funds through the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, are concentrated in the summer to reduce service impact, marking the final disruptions affecting the Sol tunnel.
