The primary objective of this initiative is to prevent accidents and pedestrian collisions, especially in areas considered sensitive or where residents have expressed concern about high vehicle speeds.
Inadequate speed is a key factor in road accidents in Spain, contributing to over one-fifth of fatal accidents. Nearly half of drivers admit to exceeding speed limits in urban areas, significantly increasing the risk for pedestrians and other vulnerable road users.
The measure aims to reduce risks for drivers and pedestrians, thereby enhancing overall road safety in the municipality. It is noted that higher speeds increase reaction time and braking distance, and the likelihood of an unforeseen event resulting in a serious accident.
In urban areas, speed is crucial for the coexistence of vehicles and pedestrians. While the fatality rate for a pedestrian hit at 80 km/h is almost total, at 30 km/h this risk drops to 10%, highlighting the importance of this limit in protecting the most vulnerable users and reducing injury severity in case of an accident.
