The National Library of Spain (BNE) is set to expand its operations with the opening of a new facility in Tres Cantos, situated on a plot exceeding 10,000 square meters on Avenida de la Industria. This development, confirmed on June 16, 2026, primarily aims to enhance the storage and preservation capacity of Spain's extensive documentary heritage.
The chosen property, spanning nearly 7,000 square meters of built area, will serve as a crucial logistical and storage center for the BNE's bibliographic and documentary collections. The Ministry of Culture has acquired this industrial warehouse, which will be integrated into the institution's infrastructure network, solidifying Tres Cantos as a strategic location for national culture.
Previously, the BNE operated mainly from its headquarters in Madrid and a facility in Alcalá de Henares. The new branch in Tres Cantos positions the municipality as the third geographical point in Spain with a physical presence of this emblematic cultural institution.
The mayor of Tres Cantos, Jesús Moreno, expressed his satisfaction, calling the news a "recognition of the excellent conditions our city offers" and a boost to its "positioning as an innovative, dynamic municipality ready to host top-tier projects." He emphasized that the arrival of facilities linked to knowledge and culture strengthens the city's model and its future outlook.
For her part, the Councilor for Culture, Elisa Lidia Miguel, highlighted Tres Cantos' pride in hosting an institution "essential for the conservation, protection, and dissemination of Spain's bibliographic and documentary heritage." She noted that the new infrastructure will open up "new synergies and development opportunities in the cultural sphere," enhancing the municipality's cultural offerings and knowledge ecosystem.
This initiative complements other ongoing cultural projects in Tres Cantos, such as the upcoming opening of the Concha Espina Library, which will be the city's third municipal library and a central element of the Parque Paraninfo, designed as a major service center. These developments underscore Tres Cantos' commitment to culture and knowledge at a national level.
