The number of registered unemployed people at the offices of the State Public Employment Service (SEPE) at the end of September rose by 23,587 compared to August, representing a 1% increase. This rise remains within the historical average for September.
Registered unemployment stands at 2,379,505 people, the lowest figure for a September month since 2007. Of this total, 56,476 people registered after benefiting from an extraordinary regularization, and 52% of them had been registered with SEPE for less than a month.
In year-on-year terms, unemployment has decreased by 42,160 people, a drop of 1.74%. Female unemployment fell by 40,499 women (-2.76%), while male unemployment decreased by 1,661 men (-0.17%) compared to September 2025.
By economic sectors, registered unemployment decreased in Construction (-1,726 people) and barely changed in Industry (+39). It increased in Services (+6,707) and Agriculture (+601). The largest increase was observed in the group With No Prior Employment, with 17,966 more unemployed (7.39%). Youth unemployment (under 25s) rose by 21,411 people (12.77%) compared to the previous month, standing at 189,141.
By autonomous communities, unemployment decreased in Canary Islands (-4,156) and La Rioja (-135). It rose in the remaining 15 communities, led by Andalusia (6,733), the Community of Madrid (2,773), and Galicia (2,746).
Regarding hiring, a total of 1,597,612 contracts were registered in September, of which 706,948 (44.25%) were permanent, maintaining hiring stability.
Unemployment protection coverage in August reached 87.12%, the highest in the historical series except for the pandemic period. Total investment in benefits in August was 2,242.13 million euros.
