The contract covers the execution of works to deploy the GSM-R system on approximately 52 kilometers of railway infrastructure, as well as its integration into existing facilities and its maintenance for 48 months. This system is crucial for radiotelephone communication between trains and the control center.
This action is part of the C-5 Action Plan, presented in March, which aims to modernize the line, increase its capacity, and improve accessibility. Line C-5 handles the highest volume of passengers in Madrid's commuter network, with 72 million users last year.
The installation of the GSM-R system is necessary due to the modernization of the signaling facilities, which are reaching the end of their useful life. The plan includes the transition from the LZB system to ERTMS N2, a European signaling system.
The C-5 Action Plan has a total investment of 1,350 million euros. Of this amount, Adif is allocating approximately 650 million to 28 infrastructure improvement actions, while Renfe will invest 700 million in the purchase of new trains and the adaptation of workshops.
The tendered contract includes corrective maintenance (fault repair) and preventive maintenance, as well as specific actions and service coverage and quality measures.
These actions contribute to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 9 (reliable and sustainable infrastructure) and 11 (safe and accessible transport systems). The initiative may be co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
