The Minister of Education, Science and Universities, Mercedes Zarzalejo, has reported that the Ministry's technicians are assessing the needs of the 353 public institutes and 138 regional nursery schools. The plan, with a budget of 840 million euros, will be rolled out over the next ten years, taking into account improvements already made since 2019.
Interventions will be prioritized in the 129 nursery schools and 319 institutes built before 2006, the year the Technical Building Code (CTE) came into effect, as they present greater needs. Work will commence next year in 58 schools and 17 institutes.
The work will include thermal rehabilitation of facades, energy rehabilitation of roofs (with asbestos removal if present), replacement of windows, installation of solar protection systems, awnings, pergolas, canopies, and bioclimatic adaptation of patios. Obsolete thermal installations will also be replaced, incorporating photovoltaic energy, progressively eliminating diesel heating systems, and implementing mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, along with improving accessibility.
The average investment is projected at half a million euros per nursery school and 2.5 million per institute. For centers built after 2006, which generally have better insulation and systems, the average investment will be 200,000 euros per nursery school and 1 million per institute.
Additionally, the Ministry of Presidency, Justice and Local Administration will contribute up to 400 million more through the Regional Investment Program (PIR) to enable 178 municipalities to improve their more than 800 public educational centers.
The ultimate goal is to intervene in the entire public educational infrastructure to ensure students benefit from the best facilities, regardless of their center's location and age.
