The Centre for Studies and Experimentation of Public Works (CEDEX) has been awarded an Accésit at the first edition of the AURA 2026 Awards, held on September 30th at the College of Civil Engineers of Madrid. This award acknowledges CEDEX's involvement in pioneering photocatalysis projects, such as LIFE MINOx-STREET and a pilot developed on the A-31 Highway, as well as its participation in specialized congresses.
The AURA Awards, themed «Making the value of clean air visible», aim to recognize individuals and entities contributing to improved air quality, with a focus on infrastructure, urban environments, and the creation of healthier spaces.
Among the recognized works is the European project LIFE MINOx-STREET. In this initiative, CEDEX, through its Transport Studies Centre (CET) and the Central Laboratory of Structures and Materials (LCEYM), collaborated with INECO, CIEMAT, and the Alcobendas City Council. The project studied the efficiency of photocatalytic materials in eliminating nitrogen oxides (NOx) and their potential to improve urban air quality.
During the LIFE MINOx-STREET project, various photocatalytic products and applications were evaluated on asphalt pavements, sidewalks, and facades. Their mechanical properties, durability, and photocatalytic behavior were characterized, along with studies on aging, wear, soiling, and the regeneration possibilities of these materials.
Furthermore, CEDEX participated in a pilot on the A31, applying photocatalytic products to ditches, barriers, and the shoulder. The objective was to establish the application requirements for photocatalytic nanomaterials to enhance air quality in various transport infrastructure assets.
These initiatives have advanced the study and applications of photocatalytic materials. The award highlights CEDEX's trajectory in the rigorous research of innovative technologies for infrastructure, contributing to healthier urban environments and better air quality.
