Casa de América and UNAM pay tribute to the influential Mexican filmmaker Felipe Cazals with a film series taking place from October 7 to December 2, 2026.

The series 'Mexico: The Unmuzzled Cinema of Felipe Cazals' celebrates the work of one of Mexican cinema's most lucid and committed directors. Felipe Cazals (1937 – 2021), trained in Paris, returned to Mexico in the mid-sixties and co-founded the Cine Independiente collective. He debuted in the official circuit with Emiliano Zapata (1970).
His acclaimed 'trilogy of violence'—comprising Canoa, El apando, and Las Poquianchis (1975-1976)—offered a critical look at Mexican social reality, earning him numerous Ariel Awards and the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. Throughout his career, he directed some twenty feature films, including Los motivos de Luz (1985), El tres de copas (1986), Chicogrande (2010), and Ciudadano Buelna (2010). He received the National Prize for Arts and Sciences in 2008 and the Golden Ariel for his career in 2010.
Casa de América, along with UNAM (through the UNAM-Spain Mexican Studies Center and Filmoteca UNAM), has organized this retrospective featuring six key pieces from his filmography. The selection spans from the rawness of his 'trilogy of violence' to his later forays into historical and social protest cinema.
The series program includes screenings of Canoa (1976), El apanado (1975), Las Poquianchis (1976), El tres de copas (1986), Chicogrande (2010), and Ciudadano Buelna (2010).
The screenings will take place at Casa de América, located at Plaza de Cibeles, s/n, every Wednesday from October 7 to December 2, 2026, at 6:00 PM. Admission is free until full capacity, with tickets distributed one hour before the start at the Information Point box office.
