The Fernán Gómez Theater. Cultural Center of the City of Madrid is hosting the exhibition 'Lux & Umbra' by Dutch photographer Viviane Sassen until July 26. This exhibition marks Sassen's first major solo show in Spain and presents a journey through over three decades of her work, inviting visitors to rediscover her visual universe from a poetic and non-chronological perspective.
The selection includes iconic series such as 'Flamboya' and 'Parasomnia', alongside photographs taken in Africa, pieces specially recovered for this occasion, and new productions, including the collage series 'Cadavre Exquis'. The exhibition highlights the recurring themes in Sassen's work, where the interplay of light and shadow serves as both a formal and symbolic element, while color, geometry, and sculptural compositions elevate photography into a space of dialogue between the real and the imaginary.
“"PHotoESPAÑA once again places Madrid at the international center of contemporary photography with exhibitions of the caliber of 'Lux & Umbra', allowing the public to engage with one of the most original and influential photographers of our time."
Marta Rivera de la Cruz, the delegate for Culture, Tourism, and Sport of the capital's City Council, visited the exhibition and emphasized its significance. She highlighted how Viviane Sassen's work demonstrates photography's capacity to transcend documentary purposes and become an artistic language capable of generating new ways of seeing, imagining, and understanding the world. For the municipal government, Sassen's presence in Madrid is a recognition of an artistic career focused on exploring identity, memory, representation, and visual perception.
