The 'No al Cantón de Los Morales' Platform and the Association of Neighbors of Carabanchel Alto have stated their intention to resume mobilizations. The reason is the reactivation of a cleaning depot project on Los Morales street, located in the PAU of Carabanchel. The neighborhood groups are demanding that another location be found, as they claim the municipal government "committed" to.
Residents argue that in 2022, under the mayorship of José Luis Martínez-Almeida, the Madrid City Council had pledged not to build the facility at the current site on Los Morales street, 27. However, neighborhood associations point out that, after four years, this promise appears to have been broken.
Last week, the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, commented on the depot, stating that the district's council president, Carlos Izquierdo, had held an informational meeting with residents. According to the mayor, it is a facility of "barely 100 meters" intended for workers' changing rooms, a similar argument to that made by the council regarding the Montecarmelo project, which is currently halted by the courts.
During the meeting, neighborhood entities reported, via a statement, that they conveyed to Carlos Izquierdo their concern over the City Council's "continuous contradictions." Despite the council insisting that the facilities will only be changing rooms, residents warn that "the project's own plans reflect other uses and infrastructures" that could not be clarified during the meeting.
The associations emphasize that "residents consider that the Madrid City Council is breaking its word and acting with a complete lack of transparency and respect towards the neighborhood and its resident associations."
Given this situation, the 'No al Cantón de Los Morales' Platform and the Association of Neighbors of Carabanchel Alto have announced the resumption of mobilizations. The goal is "the defense of the neighborhood's environment and to demand the fulfillment of the commitments made by the City Council."
