The Madrid City Council has announced the Vallecas Abierto project, an 11.5 million euro initiative to transform the area around the Scalextric de Vallecas with a vertical garden, increased pedestrian space, and new facilities under the bridge.

The intervention, expected to last approximately two years, will include a 700 square meter vertical garden designed to mitigate noise, in addition to 3,600 square meters of new pedestrian areas. Facilities will also be established under the bridge, with their use to be defined in consultation with neighborhood associations.

"This initiative represents a long-awaited demand from residents of a heavily degraded environment."

José Luis Martínez-Almeida · Mayor of Madrid
The first phase of the works will commence this summer with the installation of the vertical garden, scheduled for completion by February 2027. Among the options for the facilities under the bridge, the mayor has mentioned the possibility of a rehearsal room.
The project also includes the creation of a network of pedestrian routes and the pedestrianization of adjacent streets, such as Monte Olivetti. The mayor emphasized that Vallecas Abierto is “the best that can be done” in an area through which 300,000 vehicles pass daily.
Despite this intervention, the City Council maintains the long-term goal of burying the bridge, although this possibility is conditioned on a future action linked to Abroñigal.
