The close proximity in time and space of both blazes, separated by barely a hundred meters, has led investigators to consider intentionality as the most probable cause. The first alert was received on Amparo Usera Street, where wooden planks accumulated on the public road caught fire, severely damaging two parked cars.
Just five minutes later, firefighters were notified of a second fire on Hermenegildo Bielsa Street. On this occasion, the flames consumed several garbage containers and a third car. The intensity of the fire was such that the facade of a nearby arcade suffered heat and smoke damage.
These incidents in Usera add to a series of recent acts of vandalism in the capital. The National Police arrested a middle-aged Spanish man last Tuesday, March 31, as the alleged perpetrator of several fires in the Centro district. That individual was apprehended in Plaza de Santo Domingo after burning containers and street furniture on streets such as Princesa, Travesía Arenal, and Caños del Peral.
During his arrest, the suspect attempted to mislead officers from the Operational Response Group (FOCUS) by pretending to read a book. Incriminating items were found in his backpack, including spare clothes, toilet paper rolls, and a long kitchen lighter, allegedly used to start the fires. The police are now investigating whether there is any connection between these events and the fires in Usera.
