Five senior centers in Torrejón de Ardoz are operating as climate shelters, offering rest, socialization, and activities to protect the elderly from high temperatures.

The initiative, now in its second year, has become an essential service for the care of the elderly during the summer. The five centers in Torrejón de Ardoz serve around 3,000 users weekly, with extended hours to ensure a nearby space for rest, socialization, and activity.
This summer, new features have been introduced to transform them into 'Active Shelters'. An exercise circuit with floor stickers has been installed at the center on calle Madrid, featuring simple movements adapted to improve mobility and balance. Users can also enjoy reading areas, a book exchange point, dance animation, and social activities, promoting health through physical activity.
As a new offering, fresh lemonade is available at affordable prices to encourage hydration, and memory exercise and puzzle notebooks will be distributed to foster mental agility and emotional well-being. Information and recommendations for preventing the effects of high temperatures are also provided, according to Mayor Alejandro Navarro Prieto.
The Municipal Senior Center on calle Madrid also continues its daily menu service, seven days a week, offering balanced and healthy meals that can be taken home.
The Councilor for Seniors, Ana Verónica González, emphasized that the goal is for these centers to be "meeting places to prevent unwanted loneliness, spaces to converse, participate in activities, make new friends, and feel accompanied."
These climate shelters operate year-round, providing air-conditioned spaces in both summer and winter where seniors can find refuge, engage in activities, and enjoy a safe and welcoming environment.
The designated centers include: San José Senior Center (calle Pamplona), El Parque Senior Center, Avenida de Madrid Senior Center, La Cañada Senior Center, and Calle Madrid Senior Center, each with specific operating hours.
