The Upper House joins the commemoration of this date, officially declared by the United Nations (UN) in 2017, coinciding with the anniversary of the creation of the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD).
This action recalls the unanimous approval in 2007 by the Senate of the Sign Language Law, which guarantees communication access for deaf individuals.
According to data from the World Federation of the Deaf, there are approximately 70 million deaf people worldwide, using over 300 sign languages. In Spain, the National Statistics Institute (INE) estimated in 2022 that the number of deaf people exceeds one million, of whom only 2.2% use sign language for communication.
International Sign Languages Day is an opportunity to support the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of deaf and deafblind people. With this illumination, the Senate expresses its support for this community and their families.
