Madrid's alternative venues are launching their autumn programming with Surge Madrid en Otoño, running from September 22 to October 11. A total of 19 spaces across the region will host 58 performances encompassing dance, music, performance art, and multidisciplinary formats.
The showcase, now in its 13th edition, will feature proposals addressing current themes such as migration, multilingualism, and artificial intelligence, aiming to connect with contemporary audience concerns. It will also include reinterpretations of classic myths and works by universal authors like George Orwell and William Shakespeare.
Out of the 58 scheduled performances, 37 are absolute premieres. The program also includes 13 transversal activities, three creative residencies, and the participation of five emerging artists. The presentation took place at the La Mirador venue, where the Director General of Culture and Creative Industries, Manuel Lagos, highlighted the role of these alternative spaces in Madrid's cultural life.
Transversal activities will extend beyond the traditional stage, taking place in lobbies, streets, and even social media. Notably, the urban dance piece MELSA will incorporate Spanish Sign Language and live audio description.
Creative residencies, hosted in venues such as AZarte, DT Espacio Escénico, and Teatro La Usina, will result in three new projects. The participating venues have been reference points for artistic creation and experimentation in Madrid for over three decades.
