The Ramón y Cajal University Hospital, a public center of the Community of Madrid, has completed its latest 'Blood Donation Marathon'. The initiative, held under the slogan 'Gracias donantes' (Thank you donors) and in collaboration with the regional Transfusion Center, saw the participation of 541 people, of whom 446 were able to make their donation. Notably, 88 of these were first-time donations, in addition to seven plasmapheresis procedures.
The participation of the hospital's professionals was significant, with 257 active donations, surpassing the previous edition's records by almost a hundred. Staff from all departments showed great interest and altruism to ensure the campaign's smooth operation, which also benefited from the involvement of volunteers, users, patients, and their families.
These marathons, organized since 2009 in collaboration with the Transfusion Center of the Community of Madrid, aim to raise awareness about the importance of donating blood and plasma, especially in the lead-up to summer, a period when donations typically decrease.
The Ramón y Cajal Hospital has expressed gratitude for the solidarity and commitment of all those involved, recognizing their efforts as key to the marathon's success, which will benefit numerous patients.
With this edition, the hospital once again surpasses 400 donations, consolidating an upward trend since the first marathon in 2009, which recorded 145 donations. Awareness about the importance of blood donation has grown year after year at the center.
Donating blood is an altruistic act that can save up to three lives. The collaboration of companies, public and private entities, along with volunteer staff, has been fundamental in achieving these positive results.
