The General Directorate of Traffic has launched a special operation in the Comunidad de Madrid for the May 1st holiday weekend, anticipating 1.18 million long-distance road trips in the region's highways.

The operation, aimed at managing traffic flow and enhancing road safety, began on Thursday at 3:00 PM and will remain active until midnight on Sunday, May 3rd. Nationally, an estimated 6.04 million movements are expected, a figure slightly lower than previous years because May 2nd, a usual holiday in Madrid, falls on a Saturday, shortening the vacation period.
For this operation, the DGT will mobilize all its resources, including agents from the Guardia Civil Traffic Group, personnel from Traffic Management Centers, the Aerial Media Unit, and maintenance teams. Fixed and mobile radars, helicopters, drones, and surveillance cameras for mobile phone use and seatbelt compliance will be operational.
Additionally, the installation of reversible and additional lanes, marked with cones, is planned for peak traffic hours. This measure aims to increase road capacity and reduce congestion on the main routes.

"The daily forecast for displacements is around 1.5 million movements, slightly higher than last year."

The most challenging times are expected from Thursday, April 30th afternoon, with traffic jams on exits from major urban centers and on roads leading to tourist areas and mountains. The most critical period will be between 3:00 PM and 11:00 PM. On Friday, May 1st, intense outbound traffic will continue throughout the morning, especially towards coastal destinations and camping areas.
On Saturday, May 2nd, weekend departures will continue, though without significant congestion, and the first return movements will begin in the afternoon. Finally, on Sunday, May 3rd, from early afternoon, traffic problems are anticipated on the main return routes, affecting motorways and highways first, and then spreading to the access points of large cities. Traffic regulation measures will be applied in the main corridors throughout the afternoon and evening.
