The Regional Institute for Safety and Health at Work reported that the cumulative number of fatal accidents in the region has reached 43 workers deceased in the first seven months of the year. The Services sector was the most affected in July, with four fatalities, followed by Construction and Industry, each with one death.
The causes of death in July included traffic accidents during work missions (one occurred in Valencia), non-traumatic pathologies (PNT), and 'in itinere' travel (commuting to and from work). In Construction, the accident was due to a floor collapse, while the fatal accident in Industry also occurred during the commute.
In total, 7,916 workplace accidents were reported in the region during July, of which 6,604 occurred during working hours and 1,312 during commutes.
The data also reflect an increase in the severity of accidents. Serious accidents during working hours rose to 39 (compared to 29 in July 2025), and serious 'in itinere' accidents increased from 11 to 15.
Commuting to and from work, followed by non-traumatic pathologies, were the main causes of accidents during the analyzed period.
In response, UGT Madrid has urged companies to comply with legislation on occupational risk prevention concerning adverse weather phenomena. The union calls for adjusted working hours, suspension of high-risk tasks during severe weather alerts, and the provision of air-conditioned rest areas.
Furthermore, the union advocates for updating the Occupational Risk Prevention Law to cover mental health in the workplace and requests increased resources for the Provincial Labor Inspectorate to enhance proactive site visits to production centers.
