The Community of Madrid has launched a special aquatic rescue and health assistance device at the San Juan Reservoir, operational on weekends and holidays until September 10th.

The operation, based at Playa Virgen de la Nueva in San Martín de Valdeiglesias, includes a team of nine professionals from SUMMA 112, comprising Emergency Health Technicians with water rescue training, an Emergency Nurse, and a coordinator. This service complements the work of the Red Cross, which operates from Monday to Friday.
The device is equipped with two boats (one rigid and one inflatable), water rescue boards, specific rescue equipment, a logistics van, and a ground support vehicle. Additionally, there is support from two medicalized helicopters and a mobile ICU.
A health assistance post has been established at Playa Virgen de la Nueva to handle emergencies in the bathing area. Personnel also conduct preventive work, informing swimmers about the risks associated with activities like jumping from rocks or swimming across the reservoir.

During the 2025 summer season, this device carried out over a thousand interventions, including informational patrols, monitoring at-risk individuals, removal of dangerous objects, and supervision of users with inflatable items.

SUMMA 112 recommends swimming only in authorized and supervised areas, avoiding jumping into water of unknown depth, and constantly supervising children. In case of witnessing a potential drowning, it advises immediately alerting lifeguards and calling 112 before intervening, unless one has specific water rescue training.
