The Community of Madrid distributed 18,500 hats and fans this Sunday at Madrid Metro stations to protect travelers from the heat. The initiative coincided with the celebration of the massive Corpus Christi mass in Cibeles square, which gathered over a million people.
Subway users could collect these protection items against high temperatures during the morning and early afternoon. Both the hats and fans featured the Metro de Madrid logo, becoming a souvenir of the day.
The distribution is part of the comprehensive plan deployed by the regional Government for the Pontiff's visit and the massive influx expected in the city center. The Corpus Christi mass, presided over by the Pontiff, concentrated hundreds of thousands of faithful in Cibeles and adjacent streets, necessitating the reinforcement of public service and preventive measures against extreme heat.
Complementing the distribution in the Metro, the Community of Madrid deployed, through the Canal de Isabel II, several water tanker trucks to supply water throughout the day. These vehicles acted as strategic support points, facilitating attendee hydration amidst a large citizen concentration and high temperatures.
The set of measures reflects the regional Administration's commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of pilgrims and visitors in Madrid for the religious events. The combination of massive attendance and adverse weather conditions made it essential to reinforce preventive measures at key arrival and mobility points, especially in transport stations and public gathering areas.
