The arrival of Pope Leo XIV in Spain between June 6 and 12, with stops in Madrid and Barcelona, will compel Renfe to implement its largest rail transport operation in recent years. Crowds of up to 1.5 million people are expected, and the commuter rail service will be crucial for ensuring normalcy.
The railway company has announced significant reinforcements on the Cercanías Madrid and Rodalies de Barcelona lines, increasing seat availability by over 35% compared to a usual weekend. In the capital alone, this translates to more than 1.1 million additional seats during June 6 and 7, the days of highest attendance.
In Madrid, the papal agenda includes a prayer vigil at Plaza de Lima on Saturday, June 6, and a Holy Mass at Plaza de Cibeles on Sunday, June 7, with an estimated attendance of one to 1.5 million people. Other events will take place at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, Ifema, the Movistar Arena, and the Almudena Cathedral.
To meet this demand, Cercanías Madrid will enhance its service starting Saturday, June 6, at 13:00, with increased frequencies and double-composition trains, adding over 540,000 additional seats that day. On Sunday, June 7, the reinforcement will be even greater, with weekday frequencies from early morning, providing 580,000 more seats.
On Sunday, June 7, from the start of service until 14:00, trains will not stop at Recoletos station, which will remain closed for security reasons. Nuevos Ministerios and Sol stations may experience access restrictions or temporary closures throughout the weekend, depending on crowd levels and security force directives.
Renfe's operation also includes 290 additional security guards and 300 more customer service staff at key stations such as Atocha, Sol, Nuevos Ministerios, Recoletos, and Chamartín, in addition to increased cleaning personnel.
Medium and high-speed trains will also be reinforced. The Avant corridors connecting Madrid with Valladolid, Segovia, Toledo, Ciudad Real, and Puertollano will offer over 13,000 additional seats. Regional trains to Extremadura will run in double composition, adding 370 daily seats. A charter AVE train will operate from Valladolid for participants of the Youth Ministry.
In Barcelona, on June 9, the Pope will participate in a prayer at the Cathedral and a vigil at Estadio Lluís Companys. Lines R1, R2, and R4 of Rodalies will offer up to 20,000 seats per hour during that period. On June 10, the Sagrada Família will host a commemorative event, with reinforcements at Clot, Arco del Triunfo, and Paseo de Gracia stations.
Renfe recommends purchasing tickets in advance and consulting its official channels for service updates. The use of the +Renfe&Tú card for loading transport passes on Cercanías Madrid is highlighted, which will be free between June 1 and 9 for those purchasing a Bonotren.
Various ticket options are available, including Cronos (with a 40% discount from the fifth trip), round-trip tickets, Bonotren (10-trip pass), and monthly passes. Tickets can also be purchased and validated via QR code through the Cercanías app.
