The Spanish capital is preparing for the arrival of summer with the reinstallation of awnings in the iconic Puerta del Sol. This initiative, driven by the Department of Works and Equipment, primarily aims to reduce the impact of high temperatures forecast for the coming months. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) predicts highs of up to 34 degrees Celsius in the capital this weekend.
The assembly of this shade structure began on May 5th and, according to municipal forecasts, the awnings should be fully operational from June 1st. They will remain deployed until September 1st, covering the summer period. Work has been carried out mostly during nighttime hours to minimize disruption to pedestrians in one of Madrid's busiest areas.
Before proceeding with the assembly, an exhaustive review of all parts and components of the installation was conducted. These tasks included lubricating mechanisms, supervising anchors, and cleaning the fabric that forms the canopy. All elements have been stored at the premises of the company awarded the contract for assembly, disassembly, and maintenance since they were taken down last autumn.
The annual budget allocated for this installation amounts to 188,000 euros. This figure covers not only assembly and disassembly but also storage, maintenance work, security, and attention to any potential incidents that may arise during its period of use.
