The Popular Party denounced this Saturday alleged "purges" in the appointment policy of the State Attorney General's Office, demanding the urgent appearance of the Attorney General before the Justice Commission of Congress to provide explanations.

According to the PP, the decisions made by the Attorney General respond to a strategy that, far from strengthening the independence of the Prosecutor's Office, seeks to consolidate a model of political control. This model, they claim, prioritizes the affinity of the Public Prosecutor's Office with the Government over the merit, capacity, and professional career of prosecutors.
The complaint arises after the decision not to renew the position of the chief prosecutor of Madrid, a measure that the popular party considers particularly controversial. Added to this case is the proposal for the position of deputy chief prosecutor of Galicia in favor of a prosecutor from the Provincial Prosecutor's Office of Madrid, who is the wife of the Attorney General.

"The appointment policy shows a continuous roadmap with its predecessor where neutrality and merit are displaced by organic loyalty."

For the PP, these movements "deepen distrust and disaffection towards the Prosecutor's Office." Various associations of prosecutors have warned in recent months about the "irreparable damage" being caused to the institution and the risk of "unprecedented" political control.
The party's deputy secretary for Institutional Regeneration described the departure of the chief prosecutor of Madrid as "inconceivable," considering it a "purge" for having demanded compliance with the law. She also criticized the promotion of a prosecutor who was more than 800 positions behind in the hierarchy, noting that her main merit has been "applauding the convicted person."

"Between prosecuting crimes or supporting the convicted, choosing the latter is a scandal."

The popular leader defended the need for a "strong, credible, and free from any political interference" Prosecutor's Office as part of the institutional regeneration project promoted by the Popular Party.
