Madrid is preparing for the arrival of Pope Leo XIV this Saturday, June 6th, who will begin his apostolic journey through Spain in the capital. His stay, extending until June 9th, will be marked by a packed schedule of events drawing nearly 1,800,000 people, significantly impacting mobility across much of the city.
The mobility plan, jointly designed by the Community and the City Council of Madrid, includes a special reinforcement of the Municipal Police and Mobility Agents. Citizens are advised to use public transport, especially the Metro, and avoid private vehicles in the affected areas.
Preparations for the main events, such as the Prayer Vigil at Plaza de Lima and the Holy Mass at Plaza de Cibeles, began on May 21st. From June 3rd, Plaza de Lima and its surroundings will be almost entirely closed to traffic, as will central lanes of Paseo de la Castellana. Plaza de Cibeles will also face significant closures from June 4th, affecting roads like Paseo de Recoletos and Calle Alcalá.
Public transport will undergo modifications. Metro de Madrid will extend its operating hours until 2:30 AM on the night of June 6th-7th and will increase frequencies on several lines. Some stations, such as Santiago Bernabéu (Line 10), Retiro, Banco de España, and Sevilla (Line 2), among others, will temporarily close on June 7th.
Cercanías Madrid will increase its capacity and enhance services on lines accessing Nuevos Ministerios, extending its operating hours on the night of June 6th-7th. Recoletos station will close on June 7th until 2 PM. Security personnel presence will be increased.
Journeys on buses operated by the Municipal Transport Company (EMT) will be free from June 3rd to 9th, excluding the airport express line. The night bus network will be reinforced, and line 180 between Legazpi and Caja Mágica will be activated. Numerous EMT lines will experience diversions due to traffic closures.
BiciMad will offer free rides of up to 30 minutes from June 3rd to 9th. The capacity of some stations will be increased, and four virtual stations will be activated. Several BiciMad stations will temporarily close in the Plaza de Lima and Plaza de Cibeles areas.
Taxi services will be reinforced between June 5th and 7th. The Tourist and Discretionary Bus Parking System (SEA Madrid) will have all reservations suspended from June 5th to 7th.
