In anticipation of Pope Leo XIV's upcoming visit to Madrid, the Community has announced a reinforcement of public transport services. Despite criticism from the opposition, who foresee potential mobility "chaos," the Madrid Metro's operating hours will be extended during the early morning of Saturday, June 6th, to Sunday, June 7th.
As announced by the Community's president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, during her speech at the 'La España vertebrada' forum, the entire subway network will remain operational until 2:30 AM. This extraordinary measure is part of the Special Mobility and Emergency Plan designed to facilitate public transport users' access to the events scheduled between Saturday, June 6th, and Tuesday, June 9th.
Furthermore, Metro will increase train frequency by up to 125 percent on various lines and time slots, adding 111 extra trains. The objective is for the system to operate at maximum capacity, similar to peak hours, to manage the expected high influx of people.
The security and service operation will include an increased number of staff in stations, maintenance, and security, mobilizing over 600 workers. The Municipal Transport Company (EMT) will also deploy an additional hundred interurban buses to assist visitors staying in municipalities outside the capital.
